History of the
Exotic Shorthair
Cat
Where did the Exotic Shorthair
come from? The
exotic shorthair came about when breeders of american shorthairs
interbred their cats with persian cats in order to improve the
coat. Cross-breeding succeeded but kittens were both longhair
and shorthair. In 1967 the
Cat Fanciers Association officially established the 'Exotic
Shorthair' cat breed to recognize the cross-breeding of diverse
cat breeds which included abyssinians, burmese, american shorthairs
and persians. Currently, only persian cats can be
legally used in cross-breeding to produce an 'Exotic'.
