History of the Abyssinian
Cat
The Abyssinian Cat is quite possibly one of the oldest known breed of cats,
whose recorded history goes back to more than 3000 years ago to ancient Egyptian
times. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the origin of the Abyssinian:
some argue that the Abyssinian cat looks much like the sacred cat portrayed
in Egyptian art and sculptures while others believe that the cat actually
comes from the Bay of Bengal, near the Indian ocean. Still other accounts
suggest Abyssinian cats were brought to England from North Africa by a British
Captain. There is also speculation that the Abyssinian derived from cross-breeding
with the 'bunny cat' of Great Britain.
Appearance of
the Abyssinian Cat
The Abyssinian
cat distinguishes itself with it elegance, posture and seemingly
glowing appearance of its coat. The Abyssinian stands
and walks on its tiptoes, as if posing in exhibition. The ruddy
and golden hue of its agouti-ticked coat makes this cat beam
with an ethereal light. The Abyssinian cat may also arch its
neck, as if in proud defiance.
The standard Abyssinian cat is medium
in size, slender and lithe, but strong and muscular.
Legs of this cat are slender with the cat standing on its tiptoes.
The head of the Abyssinian appears as a modified wedge, with
soft, gentle contours. Ears are large and set far apart on the
head. This cat has wide, expressive, almond-shaped eyes slanting
towards the base of the ear. The Abyssinian cats tail is medium
long, broad-based and tapered. Although the coat on its fur
is short, it has a fine, soft texture and is extremely dense.
Personality of
the Abyssinian Cat
The Abyssinian has an open and loving
manner and loves to talk and communicate with people. Its
voice is small and bell-like, disguising is intense
curiosity and extreme playfulness. The Abyssinian cat will
let you know when it wants your love and attention and will
show great affection in return. This cat has a gentle and
loving nature and seems to understand human feelings.
Although intensely curious, active and fond of climbing,
Abyssinian cats are extremely graceful and can skillfully
walk between objects without disturbing them. This cat loves
to investigate his/her surroundings and will always want to
know where you are and may devise small games to grab your
attention. Overall, this cat has a well-balanced temperament
and makes a delightful companion. But, don't expect this cat
to be a 'lap cat' for it has far too much unexpended energy.
